Charles Dana Gibson is the author of eight books dealing with various aspects of maritime history. He also played an instrumental part in the 1988 awarding of merchant marine veterans status under PL 95-202. Gibson's bio follows.

On May 7, 2008, at the invitation of Senator Daniel Akaka, Chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, Gibson provided oral and written testimony concerning Senate Bill S-961, titled "A Belated Thank You." That bill asked for special entitlements for merchant seamen who served during World War II. After the "Belated Thank You" bill failed to gain passage in 2008 it was reintroduced in 2009 as S-663. Soon after that reintroduction of the bill, Gibson wrote an essay which addressed exaggerated claims being put forth by proponents of the Belated Thank You legislation, particularly those claims concerning the numbers of merchant marine casualties. That essay can be accessed at www. ensignpress.com/maritimehistory

Gibson 's written testimony concerning S-961, a "Belated Thank You," submitted at the May 7, 2008 Hearing held by Senator Akaka's Committee on Veterans Affairs can be viewed at www.ensignpress.com/merchantmarine4

The process which culminated in the 1988 awarding of veterans' status under PL 95-202 to merchant seaman and to civilian seamen who served with the Army Transport Service is outlined in the essay found at www.ensignpress.com/merchantmarine1

Were World War II merchant seamen paid if they lost their ship? That question is discussed at www.ensignpress.com/merchantmarine2

Merchant marine battle deaths and merchant marine personnel losses, including a letter from H. E. Cabaud, Adjuster for War Risk Insurance are discussed at ensignpress.com/merchantmarine3
